Nitrous oxide is one of the most popular dental sedation methods. Commonly referred to as "laughing gas", nitrous oxide helps to reduce dental anxiety in the patient.

Despite its name, Laughing gas does not make you laugh. It just makes you relaxed for a dental procedure and most patients do not experience any adverse reactions to it.

How Does It Work?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless chemical compound that effectively manages pain during dental treatment. Patients are asked to breathe the gas through a small mask that fits over their noses. The effect of the laughing gas would be felt by the patient within a few minutes.

The nitrous oxide takes only 20 seconds to reach the brain after the patient takes the first breath. An additional three minutes are taken for inhibiting pain receptors.

To make the patient feel less inhibited, nitrous oxide slows down their nervous system. The patient might experience heaviness in their arms or legs and might feel light-headed or tingly. Some of the other patients feel slightly dizzy if too much gas is given.

After the treatment, the patient is given oxygen for at least five minutes to avoid any headaches, shivering, excessive sweating, or nausea. The oxygen helps the patient become more alert and awake as it flushes the remaining gas from the lungs.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe and useful method for sedation. The effects of nitrous gas wear off quickly once the patient breathes pure oxygen. The patient can also hear and respond to the dentist's instructions if it is given in a small dose.

Nitrous oxide allows the sedative and painkilling properties to reach the brain and body quickly. It enters the bloodstream instantly and allows the patient to feel relaxed and calm throughout the treatment. helps relieve pain within minutes of administration.

Nitrous oxide does not need needles for administration. It is the only type of sedation that allows the patient to drive themselves home as the oxide leaves the patient's system quickly.

The amount of nitrous oxide is monitored during sedation, making it safe and effective for patients of all ages, including children.
